Atletico Madrid wins La Liga title

Luiz Suarez after being sold to Atletico Madrid from Barcelona inspired the club to their first La Liga title since 2014

For the first time since 2014, Atletico Madrid has ended up winning La Liga, with veteran striker Luis Suarez having scored the game-winning goal in a 2-1 win over Valladolid.

After Angel Correa had balanced Oscar Plano’s opener for Valladolid on Saturday, Suarez went on to score in the 58th minute for Atletico.

Real Madrid crushed Villarreal 2-1 in another match, but it isn’t enough to overturn a two-point shortfall.

Villarreal’s Yeremi Pino managed to score in the 20th minute to put Real behind at home.

Real won kudos to Karim Benzema’s late headed equaliser and Luka Modric’s last-minute goal, it was already  too late as Atletico won the title for the 11th time.

Atletico Madrid’s coach Diego Simeone while expressing his heartfelt about getting crowned the Laliga champions for the first time since they won it last in 2014 disclosed to La Liga TV by saying

The world is going through a different phase right now so if we can give some joy to people it means so much to us.

The first thing that came to me was a smile. I wanted to laugh. I don’t know why. It is a joy that is warm inside.

I was thinking back to ahead of the game when we were leaving and didn’t know if we would continue after the title win. This group has a tremendous future now.

The club is growing and has done a fabulous job. It is more important than the results.
