Emmanuel Macron slapped during Southern France Walkabout

The incident took place while Macron was on a visit to the Drome region in southeastern France, where he met restaurateurs and students

A rare incident that occurred today in France saw the country’s President, Emmanuel Macron, being slapped by an unknown individual.

The incident took place while Macron was on a visit to the Drome region in southeastern France, where he met restaurateurs and students to talk about how life is returning to normal after the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a video circulating on social media, Macron, dressed in shirt sleeves, could be seen walking towards a crowd of well-wishers who were behind a metal barrier.

One man with a green T-shirt, glasses, and a face mask was welcomed by the French president, who outstretched his hand.

The man could be heard saying “Down with Macronia” (“A Bas La Macronie”) before hitting Macron in the face.

Two members of Macron’s security confronted the man in the green T-shirt, while another whisked the president away.

Emmanuel Macron, while addressing the incident of being slapped, he disclosed

I am doing fine. We must put this incident, which I think is an isolated event, into perspective. Let’s not let isolated events, ultra-violent individuals… take hold of the public debate: they do not merit it.

Macron stayed in the crowd for a few more moments, looking to be interacting with someone on the other side of the barricades.

The presidential administration disclosed that an effort on Macron’s life had been attempted, but refused to elaborate.

The individual who slapped Macron’s face was anonymous, as were his motives.
