On Sunday morning, Israel Adesanya successfully defended his middleweight UFC title, overcoming Italian Marvin Vettori in the main event of UFC 263 at Gila River Arena in Glendale, Arizona.
Adesanya thrashed Vettori by a score of 50-45 on all three judges’ scorecards.
In 2018, Adesanya and Vettori clashed for the first time, with the Nigerian taking a split decision victory in only his second appearance in the Octagon.
After losing to Jan Blachowicz in an attempt to add the light heavyweight belt to his arsenal, Adesanya wins his third championship defense.
Vettori was confident in his that he defeated Adesanya in 2018, and he never ceased requesting a rematch with the man who would go on to become the UFC middleweight champion.
He, however, got his rematch for the Isreal vs Vettori 2 in the main event of UFC 263 on Sunday and came up empty, with Adesanya prevailing by unanimous decision in Arizona.
As he effortlessly disentangled himself from all of Vettori’s takedowns, Adesanya showcased improvement in his ground ability.
The 31-year-old, recognized as one of the greatest fighters in the division, struck many leg blows and jabs, putting an end to Vettori’s hopes of becoming the first Italian UFC champion.
Vettori only had a few effective takedowns in the fight, but Adesanya exhibited off his improved grappling skills by escaping back to his feet every time, including spinning out of a rear-naked choke attempt to finish up in top position.
Adesanya dominated the fight except for those few periods for Vettori, as he hammered Vettori with a constant diet of leg kicks.
In the end, Adesanya won every round on all three official scorecards, with scores ranging from 50 to 45.
