Twitter Ban in Nigeria: Jack Dorsey Liable for the Protests- Lai Mohammed

He stated that when he first made the complaint, Nigerians did not take him seriously until an internet news organization investigated and fact-checked them

While the citizens are still been faced by the Twitter ban in Nigeria, the Federal Government has stated that Twitter and its founder, Jack Dorsey, are culpable for the loss the country sustained during the EndSARS protest.

Lai Mohammed, Minister of Information and Culture, made the assertion on Tuesday when he featured on “Politics Nationwide’’ a Radio Nigeria call-in program.

Mohammed asserted that Jack Dorsey used Bitcoins to sponsor the EndSARS protests, and that his platform, Twitter, was leveraged to exacerbate the situation.

He stated that when he first made the complaint, Nigerians did not take him seriously until an internet news organization investigated and fact-checked them.

According to the minister, the online newspaper reported that Dorsey retweeted some of the EndSARS protest coalition’s tweets.

It was also established that the Twitter founder initiated a fund-raising campaign, requesting people to donate via Bitcoins and that Emoji was created to make the EndSARS protest noticeable on the microblogging site, according to him.

Lai Mohammed said

If you ask people to donate money via bitcoins for EndSARS protesters, then you are vicariously liable for whatever is the outcome of the protest.

We have forgotten that EndSARS led to the loss of lives, including 37 policemen, six soldiers, 57 civilians while property worth billions of naira were destroyed.

164 police vehicles and 134 police stations were razed to the ground. 265 private corporate organizations were looted while 243 public properties were looted.

81 warehouses were looted while over 200 brand new buses bought by the Lagos State Government were burnt to ashes.

We had previously reported the Twitter ban in Nigeria has caused displeasure between Nigerian youths and has drawn the attention of various international countries, following the deletion of a tweet of the country’s president which violates Twitter Guidelines.
