After missing the majority of the 2020-21 season owing to a devastating knee injury, Van Dijk made his first appearance for Liverpool in nine months in a friendly against Hertha Berlin last week.
The 30-year-old is still working his way back to full fitness following surgery, and Carragher doesn’t like to see him rushed back into things too soon, with the Reds prepared to start their new Premier League campaign on August 14 at Norwich City.
Van Dijk was an essential piece of Liverpool’s title-winning season in 2019-20, but Carragher reckons it will take a bit of time for him to return to his original level after such a long absence.
